about
Discover Dahlonega (the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Convention & Visitors Bureau) serves as the official destination marketing organization for Dahlonega and Lumpkin County, Georgia. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains just an hour north of Atlanta, Dahlonega is celebrated as the site of the first major U.S. gold rush and the recognized heart of Georgia’s Wine Country.
Discover Dahlonega actively promotes the region’s award-winning historic downtown, agritourism, boutique wineries, and vibrant seasonal events. Chief among these is the annual Dahlonega Christmas Market, a premier five-week holiday celebration that transforms the historic public square into a classic, small-town Christmas experience, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the Southeast.
Challenge
While the Dahlonega Christmas Market attracts significant holiday traffic, Discover Dahlonega faced several strategic questions the data needed to answer:
- In-person visits were declining year-over-year — down 27.9% vs. the prior year, 23.3% vs. two years prior, and 25.7% vs. three years prior
- The destination’s existing visitor profile suggested a higher-income potential that was not yet being fully captured or marketed to
- Website visitors remained anonymous, limiting retargeting, email acquisition, and audience development
- The full visitor journey — where people came from and went before and after Dahlonega — was unmapped
strategy
To decode the holiday visitor and address the volume decline, the campaign utilized a synchronized digital-to-physical tracking strategy. The plan focused on running passive digital identification alongside real-time mobile location tracking to analyze the entire consumer lifecycle—from early-stage holiday travel planning on the web to physical footprints on the streets of Dahlonega.
solution
RMG’s solution was executed through two primary proprietary technologies operating over the holiday window:
- SmartPiXL Website Visitor Intelligence: RMG deployed SmartPiXL on the Discover Dahlonega website across the full holiday window. The platform de-anonymized site traffic, matching visitors against RMG’s 150M+ household database to append demographic and psychographic attributes to previously anonymous sessions.
- Bullseye In-Person Geoframe Intelligence: Bullseye geoframes were deployed across Dahlonega throughout the holiday season to passively capture mobile device signals from in-person visitors. Device data was matched to RMG’s identity graph and enriched with demographic, lifestyle, and behavioral data — including a first-ever visitor journey mapping layer.
results
Deploying the SmartPiXL and Bullseye platforms generated critical web and location insights, uncovering clear pathways for strategic growth:
- Digital & Database Acquisition: SmartPiXL tracked 323,835 website visits (40,093 unique) and successfully matched profiles for age (76%), income (77%), and marital status (71%). Crucially, it captured 22,262 direct visitor email addresses (54% match rate) to form a high-value holiday re-engagement list.
- In-Person Visitor Behavior: Bullseye tracked 296,200 unique visitors across the 38-day season. Matched records revealed that 75.1% were non-local, averaged 2.17 visits, and stayed a notable 206 minutes per visit. UTM attribution mapped campaign performance and verified peak research spikes in early November and late December.
- Co-Marketing & Wine Trail Activity: Location mapping traced pre- and post-visit loops across 24 local venues, placing Montaluce Winery and Cavender Creek Vineyards in the top 5. This highlights a highly collaborative, low-cost opportunity to bundle wine-interest campaigns across regional drive markets.
- Feeder Markets & Experience Yield: The Alabama corridor (Birmingham, Odenville, Moody) was identified as the top out-of-state geographic market. Dwell data pinpointed 11:30 am to 6:30 pm as peak daily hours, while a large 250+ mile visitor cohort confirmed significant overnight lodging demand.
